About James Weiss, MD

My name is James Weiss, MD but I’ve always been called Jed. I moved to Chapel Hill from the San Francisco Bay Area 2 years ago after spending 10 years on the Clinical Faculty at Stanford University’s Medical Center as the psychiatric consultant to the Stanford inpatient pain program. I have been practicing psychiatry for many years and during that time, I’ve been in private practice, been Medical Director of two hospitals and have been on the clinical faculty and staff at UCLA, UCSF and Stanford. I have often been involved in teaching interns, residents and fellows at these hospitals and have really enjoyed it. Over the past 10 or 12 years, I’ve had a special interest in the psychiatric aspects of pain medicine, but I’ve also spent many years as a general psychiatrist and psychotherapist with interests in post-traumatic stress disorders, including sexual, environmental and occupational traumas, anxiety, depression and couples issues. I was trained at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute after going to Medical School at USC in Los Angeles. With a long-standing interest in psychotherapy, my philosophy as a psychiatrist is always to think about what is best for my patients and to encourage them to develop coping skills to deal with the challenges they face. This can include good medication practices as well as reflective therapeutic approaches. At Stanford as well as other places, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with some truly exceptional psychologists and physicians, which has served me well. Based on feedback I have received, my patients have consistently found me to be thoughtful and approachable.
