The biggest global fundraiser for men’s health awareness, Movember, has made a huge impact since in conception in 2003. Since the event is so easy to get involved with, it has stood the test of time, growing more each year. To increase visibility for this awareness campaign, men are encouraged to collectively grow out their mustaches in order to help raise awareness for men’s health conditions such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and male suicide and/or men’s mental health.
Men’s health issues are oftentimes overlooked, which can lead to a lack of funding for research and initiatives to help alleviate these problems. But according to the Movember campaign official website, this month has raised millions of dollars each year. Last year in 2017, they raised about 17 million dollars for men’s health. Many people, in general, don’t know that much about the stigma surrounding men’s health issues, which is why raising awareness for them is so important.
If you can’t grow a mustache, there are other ways to support Movember, of course. One such way that is recommended by the official website is called “Move for Movember,” which involves making a goal to run or walk 60 miles total over the month of November. The number 60 is chosen due to the statistics of men’s suicide – it has been estimated that about 60 men die by suicide every hour. There are even more ways you can support the movement, such as donating directly to the cause, talking about it on social media, or even helping or hosting at local men’s health events.
If you can grow a mustache this November, go for it! Let others know your cause and speak up. Help others contribute to destroying the negative stigma on mental health! The more people that are involved, the more of an impact we can make on men’s health awareness.
