So, you’re thinking about scheduling an appointment, but uneasy about the intake interview. Whether you have been to therapy before, or this is your first time, it can be nerve-racking. Question after question, reliving your past – these are things that can make you second guess even going to that newly scheduled appointment.

Take a deep breath. The intake interview is designed to get to know you a little better and to match you with the best mental health clinician for your needs. With that in mind, you’ll want to answer each question honestly and without fear of judgment – because no one is here to judge you.

The basic questions you may be asked in the intake interview are listed below with a short explanation to help you feel more at ease and confident in taking this first step.

Demographic Information

Demographic information is a fancy term for the questions asked on every typical form. These questions include your name, address, age, etc. These questions do not seem important to many, but they give us the first bit of information needed to pair you with the right psychiatrist or therapist.

For example, if you are a straight, Caucasian female, we wouldn’t provide a mental health clinician that specializes in the LGBTQ+ community for minorities. Likewise, if you’re a thirty-year-old mom, we wouldn’t want your mental health clinician to be someone that only sees in children or someone with no parenting expertise.

Type of Insurance

At the time of your first appointment, be sure to have your insurance on hand. As much as we don’t like to put pressure on payment – we do need to ensure we’re billing the correct insurance and providing you with a mental health clinician within your insurance network.

If we do not accept your insurance, or you’re requesting services that your insurance does not cover – we will be sure to go over this with you. We do not want there to be any surprises.

Remember, we are here for you and want to help you every step of the way.

Reason for the Appointment

This tends to be the part of the intake interview where the nerves take over. Sure, you can easily give your name and insurance card – but sharing the reason you’re here might be asking too much.

Remember to take a deep breath and know that by sharing why you decided to make the appointment, you are allowing us to find someone that fits well with your needs.

As mentioned before, we’re gathering the basics, so don’t feel the need to spill everything if you’re not ready. By sharing the basics – whether you’re seeking care for a specific condition, feeling a bit off, or looking to continue treatment – we will be able to point you in the correct direction.

Type of Appointment

This is easy, so don’t put too much thought into it. We consider your needs every step of the way. We’re curious if you would prefer telehealth appointments, in-office appointments, or both! Not all of our mental health clinicians currently provide telehealth or in-office visits, therefore this is another question that assists us in finding the best mental health clinician for you.

Hospitalization History & Current Medications

By asking about your hospitalization history current medications, we can grasp a better sense of the care you may need.

We may refer out for a higher level of care. Don’t let this frighten you, this is not negative by any means. We want to provide the best care for you and your needs and with this question, we can ensure you receive just that.

Type of Service

We offer a variety of services at MindPath Care Centers, such as the Addiction Recovery Center and Neuropsychiatric Testing for ADHA, that you can read about on our website.

You may not know exactly what services you’re needing, and we’re here to answer any questions you may have. Are you interested in seeing a provider that can prescribe medications or a provider that will do talk therapy? Again, it’s okay if you’re not too sure – but if you’re looking for something specific, we want to make sure to match you with a provider that is licensed to do one or the other.

It’s important to know that psychiatric specialists do not provide therapy care and therapists do not provide medication management.

From this intake interview on, you will be matched with a psychiatrist and/or therapist that is devoted to working with you to become the best version of yourself that you can become! Please note that we plan to be open for appointments; however, be aware that power outages may be widespread which may impact telehealth and other appointments. We may not know until the last minute in all of our locations on Tuesday. Please be patient. We will waive missed appointment charges on Tuesday, August 4th in light of complications from the weather. If you and your provider are unable to connect, we will reach out to reschedule your appointment as soon as possible.
